Business-like performance from in-form Lobsters

Balham 0 Redhill 2 - Wednesday, 11th September 2024

It may only be mid-September but there is a lot to be said for being top of the league. Redhill won 2-0 at Balham, who now share Tooting's ground, on a chilly Wednesday night to make it seven wins out of seven and lift the Lobsters three points clear of the pack in the Premier Division South.

Struggling Balham, second from bottom with just one win, knew they were in for a tough game and found themselves behind in only the third minute. Ethan Ford crossed hard and low from the left and Nathan Hogan got in front of the home defence to whip a shot beyond 'keeper John Ross and into the far corner. Redhill were in control for the rest of the half but didn't add to their tally, Joe Dyett coming closest with a speculative effort from near the left touchline that landed on top of the net.

Paddi Harland-Goddard, substituting for the limping Jaevon Dyer, had a right-foot blast deflected over the bar by Ross and was then involved in the build-up as the Lobsters doubled their lead on the hour. Adam Grant beat a Balham defender to a high spinning ball into the six-yard box and headed it down inside the left-hand post.

The home side only threatened from the occasional long throw and Luke Roberts had no real saves to make. Redhill showed great energy right up to the end and might have added more goals as Ford's free-kick and a Grant pile-driver brought the best out of the overworked Ross.
