Corinthian Casuals 1 - 1 Redhill FC

Lobster Army Player of the Match

#1 George Bond

On Saturday 14th March, Redhill F.C. made the trip to Tolworth to face Corinthian-Casuals F.C..

With Casuals sitting 10th on 42 points and Redhill in 8th on 52 points, the game carried huge importance for the Lobsters in their push for the play-offs.

First Half

The referee got the game underway and the opening 20 minutes were relatively uneventful. Both sides picked up a couple of corners, but neither team could create anything meaningful and the game lacked real quality.

After 25 minutes, Casuals won a corner on the Redhill right-hand side. The delivery was whipped into the near post where a glancing header saw the ball fly into the Redhill net. Unfortunately for the Lobsters, the final touch came off Harry Pointing for an own goal, giving Casuals a 1-0 lead.

The game continued in a similar pattern, with the majority of opportunities coming from free kicks and corners, although neither side could produce the final ball or finish required.

In the 37th minute, Redhill were forced into a change with fan favourite Paddi Harland-Goddard being replaced by Adeshola Onasanya.

Another free kick arrived for Redhill in the 42nd minute, with George Bond and Darryl Coleman (“Rooney”) standing over it. Bondy delivered into the box, but nobody could apply the finishing touch.

It looked as though Redhill would head into the break behind, but deep into first-half stoppage time the Lobsters earned another free kick — this time around 20 yards from goal.

Once again Rooney and Bondy stood over the ball, eyeing up the target beyond a six-man wall. Rooney dummied the strike before Bondy curled a superb left-footed effort around the wall and into the goalkeeper’s corner.

A brilliant free kick and Redhill were level at 1-1 going into half time.

Second Half

The pattern of free kicks and corners continued throughout the second half.

Tommy Smith — who had been booed throughout the game by the Casuals supporters after starting the season there before returning to Redhill — picked up an early yellow card, although the resulting free kick was fired over the bar.

Just after the hour mark, Noah Africa received a yellow card following what looked a soft foul near the corner flag. The resulting delivery was punched clear confidently by James Dillon in goal.

A few minutes later, some grappling between George Bond and a Casuals player saw the opposition player end up on the floor, much to Bondy’s amusement.

In the 65th minute, a Casuals player flew into a challenge studs-up over the top of the ball, catching Adeshola Onasanya. Surprisingly, only a yellow card was shown. The resulting free kick was delivered in but eventually cleared away.

Casuals had a good chance in the 71st minute after overloading the right-hand side and cutting the ball back into the area, but the shot lacked power and rolled comfortably through to the Redhill goalkeeper.

Harrison Parker replaced Noah Africa in the 80th minute as Redhill searched for a winner. Shortly after, another Redhill corner was delivered by Bondy, but Harry Pointing could not direct his header on target.

The ball was cleared and Rooney was fouled around 30 yards from goal, presenting Bondy with another free-kick opportunity. This time, however, his effort drifted just over the crossbar.

With five minutes remaining, further substitutions were made and Danny Dudley picked up a yellow card for a slightly late challenge — his 10th booking of the season, meaning he will now miss the next couple of games.

Casuals pushed forward late on, but Dudley produced two excellent blocks to prevent any danger.

As stoppage time arrived, the referee began to lose control of proceedings. Twice in quick succession the linesman flagged for a throw-in, only for the referee to ignore him. The second incident saw Harrison Parker make a strong challenge on a Casuals player, resulting in a yellow card, although the throw-in was still awarded to Redhill.

Harrison launched a long throw into the box, the ball was knocked down into the path of George Bond on the edge of the area, but his effort flew agonisingly over the crossbar.

The full-time whistle followed shortly after, with the points shared in a scrappy but competitive encounter.

Full Time: Corinthian-Casuals 1 – 1 Redhill

What It Means

An evenly contested game with plenty of set pieces but very little real quality in the final ball or finish. Neither goalkeeper was worked particularly hard throughout the afternoon.

The point keeps Redhill’s play-off push alive, with the Lobsters remaining in 8th place and just three points behind Fleet Town F.C. in 5th.

The fixtures continue to come thick and fast, with Redhill’s final seven league games scheduled across a hectic 25-day spell.

Redhill’s next game sees them travel to Casuals’ local rivals Epsom & Ewell F.C. on Tuesday night. Please come down and support the Lobsters during this huge push for the play-offs.

Thanks to Casuals for their hospitality.
