AFC Whyteleafe 3 Redhill 4 - Tuesday, 3rd September 2024
Redhill and AFC Whyteleafe served up a Premier South classic at the latter's Church Road ground on Tuesday night and it was Jordan Clark's Lobsters who finally edged an exhausting contest 4-3 after scoring twice in the last ten minutes of normal time.
'Leafe topped the table at the delayed kick-off but Redhill, still the only team in the division with a 100% record, took the game to their hosts from the start and were rewarded with a goal after eight minutes. 'Leafe defender Antone Douglas seemed to lose his bearings after Tommy Smith had fired over a high cross from the right and headed the ball over his own goalkeeper and against the underside of the bar. Nathan Hogan, following up, made sure the ball had crossed the line.
Within a minute the home side were level, Ryan Gondoh beating Joe Dyett for pace before drilling a low shot into the far corner. On 20 minutes Jay Simpson slipped the ball through for Hogan to slide a left-footer past James Shaw for 2-1 but again 'Leafe came back as Daniel Bennett headed home from a free-kick for another equaliser.
'Leafe finally got their noses in front ten minutes into the second half as Omari Delgado tangled with Dyett inside the box and referee Tolga Inanc called it as a penalty, though he could just as easily have awarded a free-kick to Redhill. Delgado blasted his spot-kick into the roof of the net and after that the never-say-die Lobsters had to dig deep in a relentlessly physical game to hit back with the goals that ultimately secured three precious points.
Both were scored by substitutes. Tom Harland-Goddard side-footed the first after a Hogan effort had been blocked and Adam Grant forced in the second after the ball had pin-balled around the box in the 90th minute. Now Redhill take on Knaphill, the new leaders, at Kiln Brow on Saturday.
