Both sides regret missed chances in close fought battle

Spelthorne Sports 0 Redhill 1 - Saturday, 28th September 2024

Redhill kept their four-point lead at the top of the Combined Counties League Premier Division South with a 1-0 win away to Spelthorne Sports on Saturday. The Lobsters ended up having to fight hard to secure the points against a team who were bottom of the table and without a win.

The league leaders started confidently, as one would expect, with Nathan Hogan and Alex Keating having shots blocked in quick succession. We always looked dangerous from free-kicks, Joe Dyett heading one from Ethan Ford inches wide of the far post and skipper Eoin Fraser getting his head to another from Hogan that looked certain to hit the back of the net before 'keeper Zack Basey leapt to punch the ball over.

On 27 minutes Spelly came close to taking the lead against the run of play, Fraser somehow flicking a goal-bound shot off the line as he fell backwards with Redhill 'keeper Luke Roberts well out of his goal. With a bit more luck the Lobsters could have scored three or four in that first half but it was still 0-0 at the break.

Both teams had their chances in the second period, two in particular falling to the home side as the Redhill back-line struggled to clear bouncing balls on a hard bumpy surface. But the decisive moment arrived on 67 minutes. One of Hogan's dangerous crosses in from the right was half-cleared to the edge of the box and midfielder Olly Allen's superb strike with his left foot flew into the top-right corner for the goal that won the match.
