On Monday Redhill's Under-18s are due to face Metropolitan Police in the FA Youth Cup at Kiln Brow (7.45pm).
This is a First Round Qualifying tie in a famous national competition that started back in the 1950s. Manchester United's "Busby Babes" dominated in the first few seasons, winning five Finals in a row and scoring 23 goals in one early-round match!
Superstar players like George Best, Paul Gascoigne, David Beckham and Michael Owen have all featured in teams that have won the FA Youth Cup. Chelsea have been the team to beat in recent seasons but Liverpool are the current holders.
There was some serious Youth Cup fever when a young West Ham side that included the likes of Joe Cole and Michael Carrick took on Coventry in the Final's second leg at Upton Park. The ground was overflowing with supporters with perhaps 25,000 inside. People were standing in the gangways but I was there early and managed to get a seat. The Hammers won 6-0 on the night and the atmosphere was truly electric.
I saw Redhill play Brighton & Hove Albion in the Youth Cup at our old ground in the centre of town and there were hundreds there for a match under lights in the early 1970s. The Reds played above themselves to claim a 1-1 draw but were well beaten in the replay at the Goldstone, which I travelled down for on the train from Victoria.
So come along and watch the Young Lobsters on Monday. There could be some stars of the future there!
