In Depth With The Gaffer

In Depth With The Gaffer

Charlie Bright9 Nov 2020 - 18:56

Our new manager Harrison Williams answered some of our questions.

It's been a good start for newly appointed manager Harrison Williams, the Lobsters have won four out of six games under his guidance with a fine win at Ishtiman Premier Division outfit Leatherhead last week in the Surrey Senior Cup, his first win since being appointed on a permanent basis.

The Reds have been finding the net for fun in recent weeks with 17 goals in 6 games, something that seemed to be a problem earlier in the season. We caught up with the gaffer to get his feelings on the early days of his tenure and to find out more about him in general.

We have to start on last weeks fantastic win at Leatherhead in the Surrey Cup, it must of been a great feeling for everyone involved. What do you put the win down too?

It really was a great win and one I hope the players, staff, Supporters and Committee enjoyed and will have fond memories of. I don’t think you can put that win or performance down to one thing in particular really, the credit has to go to the players not many of them would have played in front of a crowd that size before but they didn’t hide, in fact I felt some players thrived on it. Ultimately we defended with great resilience as a team and took our chances when they came our way which was fantastic.

So it's Guildford City in the next round, the squad will go into that game full of confidence after last weeks win. Do you think a good cup run can build confidence to take into our league form?

It will be nice to put together a good cup run. It can breed confidence and create a winning mentality. which is what I want my players and this football club to have, we have a young and hungry group of players and It would be great to have a cup run and continue to climb the league table at the same time. Guildford will be by no means an easy game so we will have to be at our best to get the result we want.

Goals seemed hard to come by earlier in the season, with a fairly unchanged squad how have we started to find the net more regularly in recent weeks?

Our ability in the final third is something that for me was never in doubt as we have some excellent footballers in that part of the pitch. When asked to take over myself and the management team sat down identified what ideas we could install in the players to help create more chances and ultimately score more goals. What we looked at was simply we weren’t getting enough bodies in the box when attacking and also found our movement at times was never going to create the level of opportunities we needed. Hopefully the people that have watched Redhill recently can see we are scoring some very good goals from open play. With good quick passes and runs in the final part of the pitch. With Forward runs off the ball and getting good numbers in the box at every opportunity. What I also think is great is these goals are coming from a variety of sources as well which is important if we are to be successful.

Harrison's footballing career as a goalkeeper saw him have stints as a youth player at Wimbledon, Reading and Carshalton, before his coaching days begun at Carshalton at 18, with more recent spells with Redhill reserves and then first team assistant manager.

So what are the biggest lessons you've learnt over your many years in football?

I think football is one of those games where if you want to progress you have to always be learning and adapting. I also learnt from a young age in football that will always be setbacks in this game and perhaps I was a bit slower to realise that it isn’t the set backs that you need to worry about its how you react to those and not to feel sorry for yourself but to dust yourself off and go again. Make the most of every opportunity that comes your way.

With so many inspirational coaches currently plying their trade in England we asked the gaffer if he looks up to any of them or maybe has someone lower down the pyramid he has learnt most from?

I am certainly very lucky to have had good mentors in my time coming through the age groups at Carshalton with the Likes of Ian Hazel who has an excellent reputation within the game and had some very successful stints in management in Non-League, certainly his experience and guidance was something I learnt a lot from and hold on to those values today. In regards to the Premier league I think Jose is a personal favourite of mine as a neutral I really respect his desire to win create successful teams everywhere he goes.

Finally.... before our quickfire questions what are your goals and aspirations for the future as we head towards 2021?

I think most importantly we need to climb that league table by winning football matches and adding a bit of experience to our young group in one or two key areas to hopefully help us on our way to a strong finish to this season and ready to really push on with this talented group next year. I think there are some fantastic people behind the scenes at Redhill who have perhaps been disappointed with the last 24 months or so and Myself the Management team and the players are determined to put some smiles on faces around Kiln Brow again and hopefully in the not too distant future be challenging for step 4 football again.

Here we go the quickfire questions round.
