Hastings United 3 Redhill 1 - Saturday, 31st August 2024
Redhill were 2-1 down in Saturday's Emirates FA Cup First Round Qualifying tie against Hastings United, all the goals being penalties, before an inspired second-half performance could have earned the Lobsters a sensational result against a team two divisions above them. But when Hastings' Davide Rodari completed his hat-trick eight minutes from time, it effectively dashed their their hopes of knocking an Isthmian Premier side out of the Cup.
The Lobsters started well in front of a crowd of 625 on a dull afternoon at the Pilot Field, Nathan Hogan testing Louis Rogers with a curling right-footer that the 'keeper finger-tipped round the post. But the visitors found themselves behind on nine minutes, Rodari blasting a penalty into the bottom right corner after a trip on Billy Vigar who had tricked his way into the box past Joe Dyett and Tommy Smith.
On 22 minutes Redhill were level with a penalty of their own. Hogan was nudged from behind after a mix-up between Rogers and a defender and Smith's confident spot-kick gave the 'keeper no chance. Four minutes later a high cross from the right struck a Redhill hand and Rodari netted with the third penalty of the half.
The Lobsters were quickly on the front foot in the second period and started to win balls in midfield and create more chances than Hastings. Smith had one header cleared off the line and another brilliantly turned over by Rogers. Substitutes Jay Simpson and Seb Caballero brought more energy and enterprise to the visitors' attack and both were unlucky not to score. But the game was to end in disappointment for Redhill as they had come so close to causing one of those upsets that the FA Cup is famous for.
