Perry Williams now 55 and a managing director of Excel Office Ltd joined the Lobsters way back in 1981 and enjoyed a long connection with the club from then until 1999 during different spells. He made his debut against Folkestone Invicta and went on to make approximately 280 appearances for the Reds scoring 9 goals from left back, his first in a Redhill shirt coming against Kingstonians.
We caught up with Perry this week to ask him about his time at the Memorial ground and later Kiln Brow in the famous red & White.
Hi Perry great to speak to you about your time at the club, you must have some very fond memories.
Most memorable moment for the club?
Well I had quite a few memorable moments during my time at Redhill, an early memory of mine was when we played Fulham at the Memorial, I was a ball boy and I had the honour of meeting George Best, Sir Bobby Moore and Rodney Marsh in the dressing room after the game.
As a player two games really spring to mind, winning the Southern Floodlit Cup away at Hastings at a packed Pilot Field was a real highlight with Enzo getting on the score sheet for us, I picked up the man of the match award which made it even sweeter. Also our FA Cup game in 96-97 when Crawley visited Kiln Brow. We went down to a very narrow 1-0 defeat in front of over a 1000 fans, that was a great day for the club.
The best player you played with at Redhill and the best ground you played at?
I played with some great footballers in my many years at Redhill, but if I had to pick one in particular I'd probably say Timmy Elmes, an Ex Chelsea youth team captain.
I was lucky enough to play at some very good grounds in my non league career, The Memorial Ground will always have a special place in my heart, I also played at Sutton United, Woking and Havant & Waterlooville amongst others.
Are you still involved in the game?
Only as a spectator these days, I coached a Merstham Junior team for 8 years until 2006, nowadays I watch some local football including Redhill when I can and Horsham who play in the Bostik Premier division.
Do you keep in touch with any old team mates?
There is quite a few of the lads from back in the day who keep in touch and reminisce about our playing days!
Thank you very much for your time Perry, we hope to see you at a game very soon.
Here are the honours Perry picked up as a player:
Sussex County League Cup Winners x2, Southern Floodlight Cup Winners.
