On Tuesday 3rd March, Redhill travelled to Fleet for their rescheduled league fixture.
A few old faces in the Fleet team with Eoin Fraser, Sean Swift & Joe Dyett who all played last season along with Tom Drinkwater who played for Redhill previously as well meant that there was a lot of familiarity to proceedings.
First half
The game kicked off and within 30 seconds, Fleet had a man down - not ideal for them having to make a change but after a couple of minutes treatment, substitution was made. Very little action in the first 20 minutes with the ball mainly being played high & long, Redhill trying to use the hill at the Fleet ground to their advantage but with little success.
Tommy Smith comes in with a towering defensive header in the 21st minute but collides with a Redhill player and requires treatment. Steve with assistance of the Fleet Physio assess Tommy who has to be substituted as a result due to the head injury - we all hope he recovers quickly. Ryan Ferrar enters the field with Harry Pointing dropping back into the defence.
From the resulting dead ball, Fleet deliver into the box, a good header from a Fleet player is excellently saved by Redhill GK James Dillon, but the rebound is tapped in by Fleet's Liam Avery - 26 minutes 1-0 Fleet.
The game restarts and is a bit of a tough watch, with only two league games played during February, thanks to the good old British weather, maybe some rustiness/lack of match sharpness, but with no cutting edge approaching half time, it looks like Redhill will be going in at the break a goal down... Or maybe 2 down? 45+5 and Fleet get a penalty. Honestly, cannot remember how or why they got the penalty... But what I can tell you is that we are looking at a 2-0 deficit at the break.
Not on Jamo's watch! Penalty taken by Sam Bartlett of Fleet is put down to the keepers left, but James is equal to it, makes the save, and blocks the rebound! This is hopefully the kick up the rear end and the spark for the Redhill comeback! Half-time shortly follows, 1-0 to the home side.
Second half
Second half kicks off and the story is much the same. A few balls over the top from Fleet dealt with by James sweeping behind the 3 of Harry Pointing, Arlie Talboys & Danny Dudley. A few balls through for our attacking line of Alex Keating (returning to the side he played for earlier in the season) & Aiden Brown, but we cannot find the breakthrough.
An attack from a corner for Redhill sees the ball bounce around a couple of times, and a shot on target from Redhill which appears to have been saved by the hand of a defender - protests from the Redhill players, but the referee says no penalty. Mystifying for the players, staff and travelling Redhill fans.
As full-time is nearing, 83rd minute, Redhill win a free kick 25 yards out. Paddi, Ryan & Harrison over the ball. One walks away. Ryan steps up left footed, over the wall, and nestles beautifully in the bottom corner, Fleet keeper Sam Gray stranded. Elation all around for the Redhill lads.
Calmness needed for the last 10 minutes, pushing for the winner without over-committing. A few half-chances for either side, but nothing clear-cut, and the referee blows up for full-time. A hard fought point for both sides, lots of battling, a few bumps and bruises along the way.
Bookings for Paddi HG, George Bond, Danny Dudley & Ryan Ferrar picked up throughout the game for Redhill, along with one for ex-Redhill man Joe Dyett & Alex MacAllister (No, not another ex-Redhill player, Callum, as FWP & the fleet stadium announcer seem to be calling him).
Man of the Match - For the moment of quality with the free kick and a good battle in midfield, first half super sub Ryan Ferrar
The play-off race is tight, with only 11 points separating 9th-placed Sheerwater from 2nd-placed Tooting & Mitcham. Redhill sit in 7th with 49 points having only played 28 games so far, but with games in hand over 4 of the 5 teams above them, it's shaping up to be a cracking end to the season.
Saturday welcomes top of the table - and runaway leaders - Cobham to Kiln Brow in a game that, if Cobham win, will officially crown them champions. Redhill will hope to delay that party for another week by getting 3 more points towards their play-off charge.
Get down, support the team and lets cheers the lads on to a victory!
Thanks also go to Fleet for their hospitality as always.
