Andy Lampard's Redhill were back in competitive action on Saturday after six friendlies. The Lobsters grabbed a point in a 1-1 draw with Seanan McKillop's late goal in the Premier South opener against Hampshire side Alton at Kiln Brow.
The conditions were less than ideal. All those weeks of dry weather had left the pitch bone hard - the ball often bouncing freakishly 20 feet in the air or running away from the player in possession - and the temperature was once again in the high 20s. But there was some enterprising football from both sides to keep a crowd of 157 entertained.
After eight minutes Alton's David Garlinge missed what was virtually an open goal. For the Lobsters, Alex Keating volleyed narrowly over, and Aidan Brown's header from a George Bond right-wing corner was blocked by 'keeper Dease Kerrison with a reflex save on the line. There was no score at half-time and then it was the Brewers who got their noses in front just after the hour.
Hadif Darwysh started the move on the right and as it developed, Redhill defenders found themselves outnumbered in the middle with the alert Zac Nash getting the final touch. Then there was a remarkable period in which the Lobsters could easily have scored four times inside ten minutes.
A Jayden Smith flick was saved at the second attempt, Kerrison leapt to push away Seanan McKillop's soaring effort, Tommy Smith's header from a corner thudded against the bar and Archie Harland-Goddard missed with a free header a couple of yards out. A goal had to come and McKillop obliged eight minutes from time with a fabulous strike from the edge of the box that gave Kerrison no chance.
